The Hotel am Rosengarten

At the foot of the Rosengarten, the Pattissenhof hiking hotel tells not only of alpine trails, but also of one of South Tyrol's most famous legends. As a hotel in the Rosengarten, it is closely linked to the legend of King Laurin, whose magical glow still colors the twilight today. A story of love, pride, and betrayal—and a place that makes you want to delve deeper.

King Laurin falls in love

In the deep gorges of the South Tyrolean mountains, King Laurin sat enthroned, where his industrious dwarves tirelessly dug for hidden treasures such as crystals, silver, and gold. His pride and joy was a beautiful rose garden. One special day, a king on the Adige River decided to marry his enchanting daughter Similde to a prince. For this solemn occasion, the noblest aristocrats in the area were invited to a magnificent May Day celebration, but King Laurin was not invited.

Nevertheless, he decided to attend the celebration as an invisible guest with the help of his invisibility cloak. When he saw the newly betrothed Similde at the tournament grounds, his heart was captivated by her beauty. Without hesitation, he lifted her onto his horse and rode away with her.

Soon after, Similde's fiancé and his brave knights set out to bring the bride back, and soon found themselves at the foot of the rose garden. King Laurin, who had equipped himself with a magic belt that gave him the strength of twelve men, bravely confronted them. But when he realized that he could hardly stand against the superior forces of the knights, he reached for his invisibility cap and disappeared like a ghost among the roses of his red-blooming rose garden.

King Laurin is betrayed by his roses

However, the brave knights were not fooled and unmasked King Laurin by the moving roses that betrayed his presence. They broke his magic spell and took him prisoner.

King Laurin's curse

Furious at his fate, Laurin cast a curse on the rose garden that had betrayed him: no human eye should ever see it bloom again, neither by day nor by night. But Laurin had forgotten about twilight, and so the enchanted garden still glows in the red tones of its roses when the sun goes down. You can admire this magical glow after a wonderful hike from the panoramic terrace of the Pattissenhof hiking hotel and remember the legend of King Laurin.
