Why do you like hiking?
When you grow up in such a beautiful region—surrounded by mountains, alpine pastures, and hiking trails—you spend your childhood going on all kinds of hikes with your parents. What we particularly like about hiking is the peace and quiet, the slow pace. We live and work in a hiking hotel in South Tyrol, and sometimes it gets stressful and we want to clear our heads – the mountains are the perfect place to do that. From up there, some problems and challenges suddenly don't seem so big anymore. Of course, we also love experiencing nature, exercising in the fresh air, discovering new places and passing on these insider tips to our guests. That's why we are so convinced that we are a hiking hotel in South Tyrol. Do you have any favorite places in and around the hotel? Inside the hotel, the bar is definitely our heart and soul. We love to chat with our guests over a drink here. The Kreuzweg trail starts right in front of the Hotel Wieser and leads to Rofis Boden (40 minutes' walk). Rofis Boden is a small, idyllic clearing with a lake in the middle of the forest. It's a great place to relax and recharge your batteries.
Is there a secret surrounding your house?
There is an old double bass in our bar in the lounge area. How it came to be in our hotel is still a mystery. During the renovation of the main building in 2019, the entire hotel was gutted. Suddenly, this double bass appeared from under boards, old bricks, and insulation material. After many decades in its "hiding place," it now stands proudly on display and is a real eye-catcher. Did someone want to hide the double bass from looting during the World War? We don't know....
What do guests particularly like about the Wieser hiking hotel?
What we hear time and time again is that guests feel "at home". Regular guests in particular talk about "coming home." Our hotel exudes a particularly relaxed atmosphere. There's no pretentiousness here. We focus much more on down-to-earthness because we believe that this is exactly what guests need in a hiking hotel in South Tyrol to feel comfortable – especially on vacation, you don't want to have to prove anything to anyone, but rather be able to be authentic. We combine this approach with high quality in the cuisine and activities we offer.
Do you have any tips for winter vacations in South Tyrol?
Guests staying with us should definitely try one of the longest toboggan runs. The 10 km toboggan run on the Rosskopf is even lit up twice a week until midnight. Our tip: first take the gondola lift up to Rosskopf, then enjoy the 2-hour, easy circular hike to Flaner Jöchl and, instead of taking the gondola back down to the valley, whizz downhill on a toboggan (you can hire one directly at the mountain station).
Thank you for the interview, Johannes. May the hiking guest be with you.
