1933 - Grandfather Johann builds the Kreuzwiesenhütte
The foundation stone was laid by (great) grandfather Johann back in 1933 with the first refuge on the Lüsner Alm, the Kreuzwiesenhütte. These were the beginnings of hospitality in the valley. It was at this very hut, between herding cows and serving guests, that Franz spent his childhood and youth and learned valuable life lessons.
Tourism finally made its full entry into the valley in 1970 with the construction of the youth hostel at the family-run Zalnerhof. In 1982, his son Franz entered the holiday guest arena himself: at the age of just 21, he opened the first hotel in Lüsen. From then on, 35 beds were available to private guests for summer holidays and nature breaks. The spirit of the old farm was incorporated by integrating worn wood and stones from it.
Over the years, the hotel has not only been impressively expanded architecturally, but also consistently developed in terms of its positioning and philosophy. Always with a view to the sustainable use of local resources, the common good economy, and suitability for future generations.
Naturhotel Lüsnerhof – Pioneer in hiking tourism
In 1995, Franz became president of the Lüsen Tourism Association and, in the same year, founded the "Europa Wanderhotels" (European Hiking Hotels) together with other resourceful hoteliers from the Alpine region. The Naturhotel Lüsnerhof is therefore not only a unique wellness hotel, but also one of the founding members of the "best Alpine hiking hotels." Today, it is one of the flagship establishments for sustainable hiking holidays in South Tyrol. We are not at all surprised that Franz was awarded the Lüsen municipality's medal of honor in 2019 for his voluntary work, his efforts to preserve the idyllic nature of the Lüsen Valley, and his development of high-quality tourism.
Hats off to you, dear Franz – we salute you!
