The impressive Liechtenstein Gorge
At the Aktivhotel Alpendorf, your nature adventure begins right outside the door. Just a short walk away, the Liechtenstein Gorge awaits—one of Austria’s most impressive destinations—a place that delights visitors of all ages and constantly offers new perspectives.
Spectacular Liechtenstein Gorge
The Liechtenstein Gorge is one of Austria’s most spectacular natural sites and boasts a long history. To this day, this unique place impressively combines nature, history, and modern presentation.
A special highlight is the artistically staged “Klammwolke,” which offers a truly unique experience at irregular intervals. The combination of light and music immerses the narrow gorge in a fascinating atmosphere. Colored light accents make the steep rock formations glow, while the sound of rushing water provides a striking backdrop to the scene. The installation was created by the artist Walter Oczlon.
Even without special events or installations, the Liechtenstein Gorge is always worth a visit. It is about 4 kilometers long, with approximately 1 kilometer open to visitors and accessible on foot. The path through the gorge leads over well-secured footbridges and stairs along a rushing mountain stream and is generally easy to moderately difficult to navigate. For the roughly 300-meter elevation gain, you should plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours for the round trip, depending on your pace. Sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are recommended, but no special alpine experience is required.
The Helix Staircase and the Permanent Exhibition
An architectural highlight is the impressive Helix Staircase—a spiral steel structure that elegantly blends into the narrow rock formation. It offers new perspectives on the gorge and is one of the most spectacular photo opportunities along the trail.
Along the access path, a modern permanent exhibition invites visitors to learn more about the history of the gorge. Several high-quality stations provide fascinating insights into the formation, geological features, and development of this impressive natural monument.
The Liechtenstein Gorge is thus far more than a classic tourist destination—it combines an imposing natural backdrop with a fascinating history and a contemporary presentation into a special experience that will remain in your memory for a long time.
The gorge is easily accessible from the Aktivhotel Alpendorf: A roughly 30-minute walk through the forest leads directly to the entrance; by car, it takes only a few minutes.
