If you are planning a hiking vacation in Austria, the 5-star hotel Der Böglerhof – pure nature spa resort in Alpbach is a sophisticated place where history, nature, and hospitality come together perfectly. "Austria's most beautiful village" – this nickname is rightly given to the Tyrolean farming village high above the Inn Valley. To understand what makes this place and the hotel so special, it is worth taking a look back into the past.
For a long time, the village was isolated, yet discoveries of precious metals gave it significance far beyond that of a small farming village. Copper and silver ore were discovered in the 15th century. The Fugger trading family from Augsburg operated ore mining in Schwaz and Kitzbühel – and also took it over in the Alpbachtal valley. The Böglerhof was the seat of the administration and the mining court. There were already two inns: the "Böglerhof" and the "Jakober." It was not until the middle of the 19th century that mining was discontinued due to low yields – after almost 400 years.
It was not until 1926 that the first proper road was built to Alpbach, located at an altitude of 1,000 meters. This long isolation led to the development of a unique building and living culture. The dialect is also special – the locals call themselves "Åibecka."
Alfons Moser, the long-time mayor who purchased the Böglerhof at auction in 1933, played a decisive role in preserving the traditional timber construction style in the village. His grandson is now your host. To this day, Alpbach has one of the strictest building regulations in Tyrol. And you can see why: the village is beautifully uniform and is actually considered Austria's most beautiful village.
With over 100 working farms, 20 of which are hereditary farms, tradition lives on here. Traditional costumes, customs, and farmhouse parlors are not folklore, but part of everyday life.
Summer visitors discovered the village early on. Agriculture and tourism complement each other here without supplanting tradition. Since 1945, Alpbach has also been the seat of the international European Forum Alpbach. Every August, scientists, politicians, artists, and business representatives from all over the world meet here to exchange ideas. No wonder that exciting personalities have been coming and going at the Böglerhof for centuries – from philosophers such as Sir Karl Popper to UN Secretaries-General such as Ban Ki Moon.
