Circular trail around Lake Prebersee in Salzburg's Lungau region. This small moorland lake is a natural gem—mystical, educational, wonderfully peaceful. Here, hiking in autumn is an experience even for inexperienced hikers and children.
At an altitude of 1,514 meters, surrounded by gentle mountain ridges and enchanted forests, lies Lake Preber – an alpine moor lake that fascinates with its tranquil beauty and unique landscape. Its mystical charm is particularly intense when hiking in autumn. The easy circular trail takes about 45 minutes to walk around this natural gem, making it ideal for a leisurely break – even with children. Along the moorland nature trail, lovingly designed information boards tell exciting stories about the flora and fauna of the sensitive high moor. Between cotton grass, bog birches, and shimmering water, there is plenty of room for wonder—and for pause.
If you want to stop for refreshments after your walk, the rustic Ludlalm right on the shore is the perfect place. Enjoy a snack on the sunny terrace while taking in the peaceful mountain scenery—that's pure autumn bliss.
But Lake Prebersee has even more to offer: not only is it one of the most beautiful (and warmest) swimming lakes in Lungau, it also boasts a unique tradition. At the historic water target shooting range, you don't aim at the target itself, but at its reflection in the water. Due to a special physical property, the moor water deflects the bullet so that, with a little luck, it hits the bullseye on land. Only two lakes in the world have this special feature.
