How does the saying go? "The early bird catches the worm." I'm not really a fan of worms, but for the sunrise hike with Gerlinde, the hostess at the Zirmerhof hiking hotel, even I got up really early – and I would do it again anytime. This experience on the Pfitschkopf (2,200 m) is at the top of my "best vacation moments" list. Before sunrise on the summit The Merano region is a wonderful hiking area with a surprisingly Mediterranean climate for the Alps. The hiking season lasts from early March until well into November. Palm trees and fig trees grow here as a matter of course. It is wonderful to hike along the cool irrigation channels and through the lush vineyards and apple orchards.
The Merano region is a wonderful hiking area that surprises visitors with its Mediterranean climate. Palm trees and fig trees grow here as a matter of course, while at the same time you are surrounded by imposing mountain peaks. Perfect for my hiking vacation in Merano. I've been out and about a lot over the last few days – partly on my own, partly on guided hikes from the Zirmerhof's weekly program. But today something very special awaits me: before the sun rises, I want to be on the Pfitschkopf to greet the new day. The 3:30 a.m. start takes some effort, but thanks to Gerlinde, I feel safe. The full moon lights our way, headlamps supplementing the light. Silently and almost solemnly, we hike uphill in the night. The air is wonderfully cool, our steps steady – and after two hours, we reach the summit.
Once at the top, it is completely silent. Everyone sips warm tea and looks eagerly toward the horizon. The sky grows brighter by the minute until finally the sun rises glistening behind the mountains. This moment is almost intimate—as if you were sharing it personally with the celestial body. The first rays warm your face, and the mood shifts from reverent to lively. A magical start to the day. We are rewarded not only with this spectacle, but also with an alpine breakfast: freshly baked bread from the stone oven, butter from the alpine pasture, and the magnificent view. It couldn't be better.
At around 11:00 a.m., we are back at the Zirmerhof hiking hotel. Now it's time to immerse ourselves in the Mediterranean flair. I lie down under the palm trees by the pool, enjoy the view up to the peaks—and know that I have already stood on one of them today. It's a great feeling to have already experienced so much in the morning. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing: swimming, reading, taking a nap, and enjoying a sauna with a panoramic view in the evening.
The sunrise hike to the Pfitschkopf is an unforgettable experience from my hiking vacation at the Zirmerhof. Getting up early is worth it – for the silence, the colors, and the feeling of starting the day with a summit victory. What a day!
