This hike is ideal for anyone looking for a special nature experience on an easy hike during their hiking vacation in East Tyrol. From the starting point, it takes only about 45 minutes of leisurely walking to reach the beginning of the Edelweiss meadow. From there, an easy, level path leads 40 minutes further to the Äußere Steiner Alm at 1,909 m above sea level.
Along the way, impressive views of the majestic Lasörling Group open up. The Äußere Steiner Alm offers the first opportunity to stop for refreshments. Those who are not yet hungry can continue hiking for about an hour in a westerly direction to the Innere Steiner Alm, where a farmer's hut also serves hikers.
The edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) grows only in high alpine regions, usually above the tree line on stony, calcareous soils. With its silvery-white petals and star-shaped form, it is one of the most famous alpine plants in Europe. Historically, the edelweiss was considered a symbol of purity, bravery, and endurance. It was traditional for young mountaineers to pick the flower for their loved ones – often a sign of both courage and love. Over the years, many stories emerged of mountaineers climbing to great heights for their sweethearts. Things did not always end well, but the edelweiss remained a symbol of the connection between courage, adventure, and love.
Today, the flower is strictly protected by nature conservation laws – it is not allowed to be picked. The hike to the edelweiss meadow allows every visitor to experience it in a completely safe way: simple, easily accessible and full of beauty.
