The South Tyrolean apple – a brand
The designation "South Tyrolean apple" is a protected trademark that allows the cultivation of 17 specific varieties according to strict production and control regulations. Around 950,000 tons of apples are harvested annually in South Tyrol—the largest contiguous apple-growing region in Europe. Many fruit growers work according to integrated (sustainable) production methods, and the proportion of organic farms is growing.
The apple originally came from Kazakhstan, was brought to Europe via the Silk Road, and was refined by the Romans and Greeks into the sweet, juicy fruit we know today. For centuries, it was considered a symbol of life and vitality. To this day, they strengthen the immune system with antioxidants, keep the skin young, and are easy to digest—perfect as a snack on hikes.
Walking under fragrant apple blossoms in Vinschgau in the spring and biting into red-cheeked fruits in the fall while enjoying hostess Inge's homemade apple bread – two good reasons to spend a hiking vacation at the Vinschgerhof in different seasons.
