Active at the foot of the Großglockner

Wanderhotel Taurerwirt

Mountain adventure between Großglockner and Lienzer Dolomites

Active at the foot of the Großglockner

A perfect holiday in East Tyrol should include the following: hiking in Kals am Großglockner – past waterfalls, alpine pastures, larch and stone pine forests, and mountain lakes, all the way up to the most beautiful peaks. Then, relaxing at the GlocknerSpa of the Wanderhotel Tauerwirt and indulging in regional culinary delights.

Hiking in Kals am Großglockner means being surrounded by majestic mountain peaks on every trail. The Glockner, Schober, and Granatspitze mountain groups in the Hohe Tauern National Park offer exciting opportunities for an active holiday in East Tyrol – from climbing to biking and more, all in the breathtaking presence of the mighty Großglockner.

Pure winter fun in East Tyrol

In the face of the Großglockner

Surrounded by numerous peaks over 3,000 meters, our Wanderhotel Taurerwirt is perfectly situated for an active winter experience. You can venture out on your own on a ski tour to the Figerhorn (2,743 m), or follow our hiking guides on snowshoe hikes to their personal favorite spots.

Kals am Großglockner is a dream destination for winter sports enthusiasts: perfectly groomed cross-country skiing trails and winter hiking paths, plenty of ski tour mountains, and the largest ski area in East Tyrol offer winter fun in the mountain village located at an altitude of 1,324 meters.

"I probably inherited my fascination for hiking from my father. I enjoy sharing this passion with our guests on our tours."

Hotelier & hiking concierge

Charisma of the hotel

What does a hotelier in the unspoiled nature of Kals do when he’s not at the hotel or out hiking? Of course – he fishes! The Kalserbach, a wonderful mountain stream in Kals, East Tyrol, is a natural gem and an important habitat for native fish. The Rogl family and their co-tenants have been managing it for three generations.

Hotelier Christoph is an avid fly fisherman himself – he has even fished in Alaska! Now, he invites you to join him on an exclusive guided fishing experience along the hotel’s own 15 km stretch of the river. Expert tips and tricks included.
