A virtually undiscovered paradise, Kreuzeck Mountain in western Carinthia is a wonderful insider’s tip for hikers. From the unique herb village of Irschen, remote paths lead to the easily accessible peaks of the southern side of the Alps, affording expansive views of the snow-capped peaks of the Hohe Tauern Mountains and the jagged pinnacles of the Lienz Dolomites. More than fifty crystal-clear mountain lakes, colourful and aromatic herb gardens and unique, flowering meadows set this gem of a region apart. In between, the Drava River meanders through the upper Drautal Valley: a European reserve, this region also grants cyclists and canoeists glorious perspectives of Carinthia’s richly diverse natural landscape.
