Along the broad alluvial fans and prehistoric debris flows in the sunny Vinschgau Valley, you’ll find expanses of orchards, medieval castles, and picturesque villages. Some of the most beautiful hiking trails today run alongside ancient irrigation channels known as Waalen. One of the longest of these characteristic Waalweg trails in the Vinschgau Valley is the Schnalswaalweg: the channel conducts water out of the Schnalstal (Senales) Valley to Tschars (Ciardes) and Kastelbell (Castelbello), flowing through vineyards, orchards and Mediterranean vegetation all the way to Reinhold Messner’s celebrated Juval Castle.
